Last week’s picks – nothing but tricks

Last Week: Family Matters

Last weekend, I finally got some nice weather. It was an enjoyable ride down to Myrtle Beach where I got to watch my cousin play against Coastal. With only one cash lot on campus, we were a bit worried as we rolled in at two p.m., thinking the lot might be full. Thankfully it was not and we had a good tailgate, surrounded by friendly Marshall fans. Unfortunately, the Chanticleers were more than fired up for their Homecoming game and they jumped all over the Herd straight from the start. I will post my review in a couple of weeks (yeah – I am way behind), but suffice it to say, Coastal is not bad at all.

Last Week’s Picks: The decline continues:

It is cool to see my cousin’s son play at the D1 level. Watching his team self-destruct, not so much. I thought Colorado State would play Air Force close. They did, but only for a half. New Mexico was, well, New Mexico. Once again, the Badgers managed to keep me from going O-fer. I will have to toast them with an Old Fashioned this week. Nonetheless, I have now officially slipped below five hundred. I give it a slight asterisk because, like I said in last week’s post, if I could bet on VA Tech legally I would have. The Hokies appear to have righted the ship.

Other observations from Week 9

  • I don’t feel bad missing the Ga State – Ga Southern game. The Eagles had that game well in hand by half-time. Similarly, the battle for little Ohio was not much better, where it appeared that the Red Hawks of Miami were safely in control most of their game against the Bobcats of Ohio U.
  • The finish to the Memphis – North Texas game was nuts. How do you give up a 36 yard touchdown with ten seconds left? I bet Mean Joe was not very happy with that finish.
  • Oklahoma stumbles again. There’s no conference that gets their teams eliminated from FBS playoff consideration quicker than the Big 12. Choke City. Meanwhile, Nick Saban is quietly stacking up wins over at Bama, just waiting to say “What about us?”
  • The winless streak continues for the lowly Bearkats of SHS. This week it was a heartbreaking three point Wednesday night loss to UTEP at home. I am pretty sure the Sam Houston statue outside of Huntsville shed a tear after that one.

Week 10 Picks

Time to get right. I feel pretty good about this week’s picks, which probably means another beating. I have no doubt the Falcons will beat the Black Knights, but I am betting on the rivalry to make Army keep it close against Air Force. Penn State had a wake up call against IU last week, I expect them to bring the wood against Maryland. The Terps have been falling apart as of late. Minnesota is home against hapless Illinois. They should be able to cover the one and half points against the Illini. I really don’t have much support for picking Rice against SMU. But every time I look at an Owl score, it is closer than I thought it would be. How’s that for analytics?

Other observations for Week 10

  • If you are in Lubbock, and I feel for you if you are, at least you can pick up a $3 ticket for the TCU – Texas Tech game on Thursday night. Play your cards right and they may even pay you to go.
  • After Georgia Tech upsets UNC, I thought they would be the favorite against UVA. A closer look says the ‘Hoos have been playing pretty good football as of late. Glad I did not bet this game.
  • It is hard to fault ESPN’s Game Day choice to go to Tallahassee for the LSU – ‘Bama game. There’s not much else exciting on the schedule this week so we will subjected to a flood of SEC propaganda on Saturday morning.
  • SHS Bearkat Watch: Sam Houston hosts Kennesaw State this weekend. Could they finally get a win? Makes me wish I had ESPN+ so I could watch. Well, not really, but I will check the score from time to time.

That’s all I got – enjoy the games this week.
