With LSU winning the baseball national championship over fellow SEC school Florida, It is hard to argue that the SEC isn’t the most dominant conference when it comes to sports. However, an SEC school has never won the NACDA Director’s Cup for the best finish in all NCAA sports combined. Stanford has owned that distinction with twenty-five straight titles until Texas won it in the last two academic years. Once UT jumps to the SEC, the SEC will be even more dominant across the spectrum of sports. In popular opinion, football, basketball and baseball are the marquee sports which further fortifies the SEC’s reputation. Some may cheer for dynasties and dominance, I do not. It isn’t that I don’t like SEC schools, particularly LSU. In fact, I have never had a bad time with LSU fans and alumni. Whether it was playing in a college softball league or tailgating in Death Valley, good food and good drink are always in the mix when hanging with the Tigers. “Laissez le bon temps rouler”, indeed. Nonetheless, I have had my fill of the SEC. It’s a bit like the Marvel series. I can only enjoy the same plot line some many times. I don’t care if it is Notre Dame or Ohio State or USC just give me something different in January.
Fresno State to the rescue?!?
Our next refreshed review is unlikely to change that story, but Fresno State has done their share of giant killing. I did not realize how well the Bulldogs finished the season. At week five they were a struggling 1 and 4 team, having just lost to their conference rival Boise State. Fresno State then ripped off nine straight wins. They avenged their loss to Boise in the Mountain West Conference title game and then upset Washington State in the LA Bowl.
It was a great finish for one of the Group of Five lion killers. It typifies the pluckiness of the Fresno program. We had a great time at Fresno State when we visited way back in 2013. It is a short review, but worth checking out, especially if you were ever considering watching Victory and the rest of the Bulldogs live. See the whole review here.
