We were off last week for the 4th of July holiday – seeing family, eating and drinking too much, and laughing too hard. I had to easing back into working on the website while my body detoxed from an overload of carbs and an absence of fruits and vegetables. I wouldn’t say my joints were inflamed and bloated by the end of the week, but I’ve seen Macy Day parade balloons that looked more defined than I.
It was tough to come back this week, but not nearly as hard as it was for the folks at Northwestern. Full disclosure, I had written a long essay about the hazing incidents based on what I had briefly read. It was not a particularly favorable reflection of Pat Fitzgerald. I was about to hit the send button and realized I don’t know enough about the situation. Bad things do happen and this very well could be the case at Northwestern. I also recognize that the vast majority of victims of sexual and racial harassment have legitimate claims. Nonetheless, I do remember the Duke Lacrosse incident where a rush to judgment destroyed the lives of a number individuals. So, I am going to reserve judgement on this incident, probably until I visit the Wildcats in late September this year.
I do know this. Hazing is stupid. I have never understood it and always felt that at best it was a distraction with no team building value. Whether outright promoting it or just looking the other way, coaches are doing their teams a disservice.
Somewhat relevant but awkward transition:
Pitt is our latest updated site. While I don’t like to make light of a tragic situation, I like the insult of Pitt’s rival, PSU, which centers around a certain coach looking the other way. Check out our review here.
